HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Pawleys Island man allegedly went on a rampage earlier this month and cut off two of a man’s toes with a machete, according to an Horry County police report.

Matthew Morgan Hellman, 32, is accused of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and three counts of possession of firearms and ammunition after the alleged attack at an apartment on Glenns Bay Road near Surfside Beach. He is being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, online jail records showed.

Officers responded on April 3 to a report of a stabbing and found the victim at his front door where he had crawled to open the door, the police report said. He told officers that he and Hellman had been feuding and got into an argument.

During the argument, the man told officers that Hellman chopped at him with the machete, cutting off two toes on his left foot while he was in a “defense position holding his left leg and arms up in hopes to deflect the suspects swimming machete,” the report said.

After the attack, the victim told officers that Hellman went into the kitchen and started throwing plates and bowls at him before leaving the residence, the report said. The victim was taken to the hospital by EMS.

Hellman was arrested in October in Horry County on five counts of failure to appear, jail record show. That followed his arrest last May on charges of unlawful possession, purchase or use of body armor by a person convicted of a violent crime; three counts of possession of firearms and ammunition; and a drug charge.
