'Fear of the unknown' delays Edmond zoning change near I-35
EDMOND − Neighbors’ fear of the unknown stopped, for now, a standard zoning change on Sooner Road near Interstate 35 after City Council member Barry Moore described such anxiety as "something that people can't live with." Developer Caleb Hill , who recently had the winning bid to acquire Oklahoma City's historic but long-troubled Gold Dome during a sheriff's sale, owns a heavily wooded 2.5-acre parcel directly east of the Clayton Pond addition . The never-developed property is zoned for agricultural use. Hill wants it rezoned for retail and general commercial. The City Council voted 4-1 on Monday, Oct. 12, to postpone a decision. Moore, who represents Ward 2, pushed for a second delay to give neighbors more time to hear from the developer, his attorney and others. Ward 4's Phil Fraim voted against another pause. The request had already been deferred once, from the Sept. 28 council meeting. The Planning Commission unanimously approved the change on Sept. 8 and forwarded it to the council.
