Bear roams in Carmel
CARMEL – Bears have begun searching for high calorie meals after winter hibernation and the State Department of Environmental Conservation has urged residents to secure food sources that might attract bears especially in the wake of a bear sighting in Carmel less than a half mile from the historic Putnam Courthouse.
‘Bizee Bees’ Putnam’s Spelling Bee champs
CARMEL – There was standing room only at the Centennial Grille in Carmel when Cove Care hosted its annual fundraising Spelling Bee competition. At the end of the evening, Team Bizee Bees, composed of members of the Brewster Rotary and Brewster Chamber of Commerce, were crowned champions by correctly spelling the word “chiaroscuro,” meaning “the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting.”
Brewster’s “Unofficial Mayor” passes away
BREWSTER – George Godfrey, a 65-year member of the Brewster Fire Department, Korean War veteran and who for decades greeted commuters at the Brewster Metro-North Railroad station between 4:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. each day while placing American flags on a fence surrounding the station on the village’s Main Street, has died.

Carmel 'Battery Farm' Public Hearing Set for June 19
MAHOPAC, N.Y.— The Carmel Town Board tonight (May 15) voted to hold a public hearing over a potential zoning change that would limit the scope of battery storage systems like the one proposed for a 90-acre parcel near Miller Road in Mahioac. The hearing is set to take place at Town Hall, 60 McAlpin Avenue in Mahopac, Wednesday, June 19, at 7 p.m. and will address a proposed local law amending Chapter 156 of the Code of the Town of Carmel, entitled "Zoning."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE TAPINTO.NET NEWSLETTER If approved, the amendment would allow the town to impose a moratorium on the Miller Road project while it considers amendments to the zoning law that would limit such projects to a fraction of the size of the 116-megawatt project proposed for Miller Road.
