PATERSON, NJ - On Tuesday afternoon, the Paterson Fire Department responded to a fire at 790 East 18th Street and Market St. that led to the displacement of 44 occupants.

According to a statement, upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy fire engulfing the second and third floors of a three-story wood frame building with exposures. The intensity of the blaze prompted authorities to escalate the situation to a fourth alarm for additional manpower.

The fire spread quickly, causing damage to three neighboring houses and displacing 44 occupants, with the New Jersey Red Cross on the scene to relocate them. The firefighters faced hurdles, including challenges with water supply exacerbated by a malfunctioning hydrant and an obstructed one, blocked by a vehicle, which inadvertently became a casualty of the blaze.

The fire was declared under control approximately four hours after it started. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
