NEW JERSEY - U.S. News & World Report has announced its 2023-24 Best Public High Schools, which evaluated nearly 18,000 U.S. public high schools. The top-ranked schools are those whose students 1) earned outstanding scores in math, reading, and science state assessments; 2) took and earned a qualifying score in college-level exams; and 3) graduated in high proportions.

A state-by-state breakdown of the U.S. News & World Report rankings shows that Massachusetts is the leading state for high school education. This state-by-state performance comparison is solely based on which states have the largest proportion of their high schools in the top 25% in this year's rankings. Nearly half (47.1%) of Massachusetts' eligible high schools were in the top 25% of the rankings. Connecticut came in second with 43.9%, New Jersey in third with 42.9%, California in fourth with 42.5% and Florida in fifth place with 38.7% of its schools in the top 25%.
