Alaska public safety officials give latitude on studded tire deadline

Alaskans north of 60 degrees north latitude have additional time to remove their studded tires this spring.

Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner James Cockrell cited lingering winter conditions when he made an emergency order on Monday.

“Many parts of Alaska are experiencing prolonged winter weather after a near record setting snow season that has extended icy road conditions well into April,” he said in a news release. “This 15-day extension for the studded tire removal deadline will provide additional time to switch to regular tires without compromising safety.”

Residents of Southeast, the Aleutian Chain, Southwest and Kodiak need to remove studded tires as usual by April 15 . Seward, Anchorage, Fairbanks and all parts of the Sterling Highway have until the end of the month.
