PAINTED POST, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Capture Stained Glass in Painted Post opened in March 2024 and gives customers a chance to make their own stained glass creations to take home with them.

“I find it very soothing and I just love when it’s done, it’s mine. I did it,” said Stained Glass Class Member Kathy Rose.

Customers can make anything from suncatchers to even bigger projects like lampshades. For one piece, the process usually takes around three hours. For the three hour class, it’s $50. Additional wire work on the piece costs $10. For larger projects, the cost goes up.

“Prior to any of the classes, I have the designs made. I have to go in and cut each individual piece of glass and then I take it and I grind it into the shapes so everything assembles, just like a puzzle and then the extra wirework and glass. I do all of that here, so people can add it on and those are the decorations,” said Owner Kathy Corcoran.

“They take every individual piece and they have to wrap it in a solder foil. So, once the foil is attached to the glass itself, the piece will get pulled together and pinned and the solder only sticks to where the foil is. So, it’s pretty important,” said Corcoran.

“She is taking all of the pieces and pinned it together. So, it’s pulling it together and getting it ready to solder. And she just does a flux, which just makes the solder flow and also cleans up any oils and things that might get on your hands when you’re putting it together. And then it’s just simple as using the soldering iron, putting the solder itself on to the piece and once it melts, you’re just attaching all of the pieces together,” said Corcoran.

For Kathy Rose and her daughter Debbie, making stained glass pieces helps them cope with tragedy.

“My house caught on fire a year ago. Oh, I’m so sorry. And I lost them all. so, now I’m doing it to replace everything. Is doing this in a way helping you cope with that loss? Oh, absolutely. Yeah, it’s each piece that I do and will continue to do is gonna make my home; my house more of a home,” said Rose.

Only people twelve and older are able to participate in the activity because of the hot irons used. The owners say the shop’s website will be up soon. Those interested can email Kathy Corcoran at Capturesuncatchers@gmail.com.
