'Chef's Kiss' reopens as a new Topeka catering business
A recently closed Topeka restaurant is rebranding and opening as a catering and events business. Chef’s Kiss Ristorante closed Aug. 30 after only a year in business. The restaurant opened August 2025, serving Italian cuisine, wine and cocktails. The building at 1618 SW Washburn Ave. is now for lease. Page will reopen next month as a catering and events business operating out of The Woodshed Event Center at 1901 N. Kansas Ave. “Chef’s Kiss (Ristorante) was very demanding of my time,” said Page. “There were times I couldn’t be on my feet, and the restaurant really struggled.” She said running a restaurant required her to work six days a week, which impacted her health. “I had to be there," Page said, "and I neglected my health to the point that I was admitted to the hospital.” Page was searching for a commercial kitchen to fulfill catering orders placed before the restaurant closed when another opportunity presented itself. “It started out as me looking for a ghost kitchen I could do some catering out of," she said. Uptown Treasures takes chance with move to Topeka, impeded by roadwork
Abra Wheeler, owner of Uptown Treasures in Gage Village, moved her home decor and furniture business to Topeka in April 2026 from its previous location in Holton. “I was in Holton for 15 years as Holton Home Decor. I moved to Topeka last September and was driving back and forth. I decided to take the chance,” said Wheeler. Uptown Treasures carries home decor, gifts, antique furniture and clocks, luxury snacks, textiles, kitchenware, candles and wax melts. “Everybody that has come in has been very excited about it,” said Wheeler. “They like having gifting options for birthdays, weddings, and all the things.” She also offers design and decorating services to Uptown Treasures customers. "I do a lot of florals. I get quality florals, and people will bring in a vase or a tray and ask for help filling it with fall or Christmas decor," Wheeler said. "Or they’ll bring in a picture of a wall and say, ‘I want this done.’" Road construction has presented challenge for small businesses While the public response to Uptown Treasures has been overwhelmingly positive, Wheeler said the construction on SW Huntoon Street in Topeka has made it difficult to operate her small business in recent
