New Particularly Dangerous Situation Label Will Appear on Blizzard and Ice Storm Warnings for Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and the Nation This Winter

INDIANAPOLIS — The National Weather Service is adding a new level of urgency to certain winter weather warnings. Starting with the 2026–2027 winter season, Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings may include the phrase “Particularly Dangerous Situation,” or PDS. The label will be used when forecasters have high confidence in a rare, extreme, and potentially historic winter weather event. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — A cold front will bring scattered rain showers to the Great Lakes region late this week as it pushes east across the Midwest. Simulated radar for 4 a.m. EDT Thursday, October 29, shows the front stretching from central Wisconsin near Wausau southwest through Iowa and into Missouri. Scattered showers are developing ahead of it across southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Lake Michigan and west Michigan. The front is expected to keep moving east toward Indiana, Ohio and southeast Michigan, including the Indianapolis and Detroit areas, through Thursday.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Enjoy the warmth while it lasts. A cold front arrives later today, but first northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio will see one very warm October day. Highs today reach 77 degrees under plenty of morning sunshine. Clouds build in late this afternoon, with a few scattered showers possible this evening as the front moves through. Most of the area stays dry. Overnight lows fall to 43 as cooler air rushes in.
