Beckham sets school record, Lady Panthers secure fourth straight regional
The Lady Panther track and field team's run of three-straight Class 5A regional titles was in jeopardy heading into Thursday's regional on the new track at Great Bend High School. The Lady Panthers led Salina Central by just half a point heading into the final race of the evening. With no real threat from the Mustang 4x400m relay, Great Bend cruised in one of its signature events to secure the regional title with 95 points. Central scored 86.5 points for second, and Hays placed third with 81.5 points.
Ohnmacht, Panther 4x8 team claim regional championships
A regional title was out of grasp at Thursday's Class 5A meet at Great Bend High School, but the Panther boys still qualified for state in several events. Hays, Goddard, and Valley Center scored 120, 104, and 103 points, respectively, to run away with things. Goddard-Eisenhower finished a distant fourth with 48 points, and the Panthers scored 35 points for ninth.

Great Bend announces mosquito spraying schedule
Great Bend city crews are preparing to start fogging for mosquitos again. The city has plans to fog on the following dates: May 23, May 30, June 6 and June 13. As with years past, the city will start spraying at 8 p.m. until midnight. The public is encouraged to take precautions to limit exposure to themselves, especially those with medical issues and pets.

Great Bend students awarded bikes for perfect attendance
Twenty-five elementary students, and one preschool student, earned a set of wheels this week, achieving perfect attendance for the 2023-2024 school year. The Perfect Attendance Bike Program has awarded bikes for over 13 years to encourage students to attend school every day in Great Bend USD 428 elementary schools. Assemblies were held at all 5 elementary buildings to celebrate the students’ accomplishments with their peers, teachers, and families.

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, May 14 shows a slight easing for parts of the state but our area and the moderate drought isn’t easing here. In fact, there is now an area of extreme drought in the extreme southwest corner of Rush County and northeastern Pawnee County. Southeast Kansas continues faring the best currently along with the northern tier of counties and the Kansas City area. The six to ten-day outlook (May 21 to 25) indicates a 33 to 50% chance of leaning to above normal temperatures and 33 to 40% chance of leaning to above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (May 23 to 29) indicates a 33 to 50% chance of leaning to above normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% leaning above normal for precipitation. The challenge is rainfall is typically scattered storms and widespread beneficial rains are unlikely.
Go Cart races coming to annual Hoisington Labor Day Celebration
Every year, the Labor Day Celebration in Hoisington begins at the end of August or the beginning of September, and Barton County gets excited for the weekend-long event. Hoisington's Labor Day Celebration began in 1896 with its first parade. Since it was established in 1957, the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce has hosted the celebration each summer. Chamber Director Karen Baldyga said go-cart races will be a new activity at this year's celebration on Saturday, Aug. 31.

BAM planning baseball mural at Al Burns Field in Great Bend
If you build it, they will come. The famous line from "Field of Dreams" is often applied to any development project. In Great Bend, it can actually apply to baseball. Considerable renovations have been made to Al Burns Field at Veterans Park, home of the Great Bend Bat Cats. Barton Arts Movement (BAM) Co-Chair Andrea Bauer said the new dugout at the baseball field was a perfect spot for the next mural.
