BAM planning baseball mural at Al Burns Field in Great Bend
If you build it, they will come. The famous line from "Field of Dreams" is often applied to any development project. In Great Bend, it can actually apply to baseball. Considerable renovations have been made to Al Burns Field at Veterans Park, home of the Great Bend Bat Cats. Barton Arts Movement (BAM) Co-Chair Andrea Bauer said the new dugout at the baseball field was a perfect spot for the next mural.

New management, Hoisington pool ready for opening day
The submission deadline for pool forms with the City of Hoisington was May 1. The forms allow Hoisington citizens access to the pool all summer without getting charged each time they go. With residents allowed four guest passes as well, Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said more than 3,000 names were submitted.

What to watch: Class 5A regional track and field in Great Bend
Great Bend High School will host a Class 5A track and field regional Thursday. Field events begin at 2 p.m. with preliminary races on the track beginning at 5 p.m. The top four finishers from each event will qualify for the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships held at Wichita State University's Cessna Stadium on May 24-25.
Great Bend police continue cleanup efforts around town
Spring cleaning is in full bloom with the Great Bend Police Department. As a way to clean up trash and refuse, the Police Department pitched the idea of Project Clean Sweep. Police Chief Steve Haulmark said officers, along with individuals facing traffic violations or misdemeanor charges, have found areas throughout town that need cleaning.
World War II survivor to present program in Great Bend
Barton County Historical Society will play host to Mildred Schindler Janzen at 7 p.m., Monday, May 20. Janzen will be present to answer questions to those in attendance after a brief documentary about her life is screened in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the Barton County Historical Society, 85 S. Hwy. 281, Great Bend. Admission is $5, while members and those 16 and under are free. Light refreshments will be served following the program.

Resurfacing JUCO road begins Friday in Barton Co.
Venture Corporation plans to begin work on the NE 30 Road asphalt resurfacing project on Friday, May 17. The project extends from US-281 highway east to NE 30 Avenue. The project involves the placement of a hot mix asphalt overlay followed by rock edge wedges and pavement striping. Work is expected to be completed in about two weeks.
Barton Commission approves Youth Crew trip to Chicago
One of the final decisions the Barton County Commission made in its stay at the former JC Penny building in Great Bend was a fun one. Six Barton County Youth Crew members attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA) Youth Conference near Dallas last year. Tuesday morning, Juvenile Services Prevention Advocate Tyler Morton sought approval to take eight members to this year's conference in Chicago on July 15-18.
