The Edmond North boys wrestling team and the Putnam City West girls basketball team were named the Boys and Girls Teams of the Year Friday night at the 2024 OKC Metro High School Sports Awards, presented by LC Management Group.

The show was held at the Rose State Performing Arts Center and honored more than 300 student-athletes from the Oklahoma City area.

The Boys and Girls Teams of the Year were sponsored by Integris Health.

The other two finalists for the Girls Teams of the Year were Mustang track and field team and the Piedmont softball team.

The boys other finalists for Boys Teams of the Year were the Midwest City basketball team and the Washington baseball team.

It had been 43 years since Putnam City West won a state title. The year was 1981 to be exact.

And the Patriots didn't just win a title this year, they were known around the country. Putnam City West was ranked in the top 25 nationally by ESPN's S-C Next Rankings and dominated their competition, finishing the year with a 27-1 record.

Led by Girls Basketball Player of the Year nominee Caya Smith and Girls Team Coach of the Year Ja'Ron Jefferson the Patriots made a mark around the state, and set a standard the team plans to continue for years to come.

Edmond North boasted one of the top teams in the country and had the most dominant season in Oklahoma high school wrestling history.

The team won the COAC Conference, the West Regional, the district championship, and eventually became the Class 6A state champions. The state win was the second in school history and first since 2013.

The Huskies had 14 state placers, which was a record, and each one of them placed in at least the top three. Out of those 14, eight took home gold. Also, at the OKC Metro High School Sports Awards, seven of them were nominated for Boys Wrestler of the Year.
