Northfield denies petition for EAW, but commits to conducting informal traffic assessment
At least one city councilor questioned the motives of his neighbors in their opposition to a townhome development, adding that the process they petitioned could cost the city tens of thousands during a time of increasing demands for a tightened budget. The 71-townhome development, Harvest Hills Second Addition, is proposed for the Harvest Hills neighborhood, located on the southeast end of town near Northfield Middle School. Neighbors gathered more than 100 signatures to ask the city to complete an environmental assessment worksheet before the project continues, but the Northfield City Council unanimously voted last Tuesday not to require an EAW. The project received tax-increment financing, or a temporary waiver of city taxes, in exchange for assurance that at least 15 units would be restricted to households at or below half the area median income. For an individual, that’s $37,950. For a household of four, that’s $54,200. Affordable housing is a top priority in the city’s strategic and comprehensive plans. Petition representative Jason Hill presented the petition, with the main concern being the impact 71 new homes would have on traffic in the area. Riverfront Drive temporarily closed beginning early July
MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Riverfront Drive, between East Main and Plum streets, will be closed July 1-2. The road will close Wednesday, July 1, at 6 p.m. and stay closed through mid-afternoon on July 2 as crews pour concrete for the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge deck.
