MSHSL changes online extracurricular eligibility guidelines for 2027-28
The Owatonna School Board at their Monday work session. During its Monday work session, the Owatonna School Board discussed changes on the horizon for extracurricular eligibility relating to its online students in grades nine through 12. During the 2025-26 school year, the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors appointed an ad hoc committee to work on and present a proposal regarding online student extracurricular eligibility, which the board has since approved. The new policy will take effect in the 2027-28 school year. The eligibility infographic provided to the board by Dr. Martina Wagner at their work session. The policy is intended to address questions of online student extracurricular eligibility and increase access for students who are fully online. Transfer rules for varsity athletes still apply, but moving forward, students in districts with superintendent’s agreements will be able to participate in activities even if they are enrolled in another school academically. However, if the same student is enrolled in another online learning program with a school that does not have a superintendent’s agreement with their “home” district, they would not be eligible to participate. Students who have already been participating in extracurricular activities prior to this new policy will

Italian exchange student immerses in local flavor
Gigi Lena came all the way from Italy to be at the Rotary duck races on Nickle Dickle Day last month. Well, not directly, but he was there for a good reason. Lena is the Waconia-West Carver Rotary’s 2026-2027 international exchange student. He was at the Rotary’s popular duck races as an introduction to the community and to experience some local flavor. The Italian student, full name Gianluigi Lena (Gigi for short) arrived here in August from Lodi, located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The city of nearly 50,000 is situated on the banks of the Adda River, southeast of Milan in an area known as the lower plain. Lena was already introduced to Rotary through his dad who is involved in Rotary in Italy and encouraged his son to make the exchange journey. Lena speaks impeccable English. He took it in third through eighth grade and has had immersive classes taught in English. So, he has immersed himself quickly here. He is playing on the Waconia High School soccer team and said he looks forward to participating in other activities during the school year. LS-H School Board forgoes superintendent search, negotiating 2-year extension with Kern
LS-H Elementary Principal Darren Kern is in negotiations to serve as the district’s superintendent over the next two years. With School Board elections set to bring a change in leadership to the Le Sueur-Henderson School District, the current School Board has pivoted away from conducting a superintendent search in favor of keeping Darren Kern onboard as the district’s superintendent. In a 5-2 vote on Monday, Oct. 5, the LS-H School Board entered negotiations with the interim Superintendent to extend Kern’s contract by two years. The proposed contract would begin July 1, 2027, and run through June 30, 2029. School Board members Brigid Tuck, Gretchen Rehm, Kelsey Schwartz, Matt Hathaway and Brooke Wentzlaff voted in favor of the resolution. Jennifer Burns and Christa Luna voted against, citing a desire to involve the newly-elected board members before making a decision. The vote comes at a time of significant transition for the district. With four new members expected to take their seats following the November election, concerns emerged over whether the board would have enough experience to start interviewing superintendent candidates early next year. That transition was at the center of a lengthy discussion Monday as board members weighed whether to begin a

Edina High School is steering women away from sports
A 14-year-old girl shows up for her first day of high school; however, she is scared to join the wrestling team, she feels too exposed in her uniform, and she thinks she shouldn’t continue playing sports because they’re too masculine. While Edina High School is not the only school impacted by the degradation of women in sports, it has come to the forefront in recent years, even with constant striving for progress.
