Oakland police are investigating a shooting and vehicle collision that occurred just steps away from a charter school and about a block from Bishop O'Dowd High School on Thursday morning.

Officers were sent to the corner of Cherokee and 98th avenues in East Oakland a little after 7:30 a.m. to investigate an alert from Oakland's ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, police said.

Officers found evidence of a shooting and a vehicle collision but police didn't release any additional details.

Administrators at Bishop O'Dowd said they were in contact with OPD, who told them that the campus wasn't in danger and that classes could proceed as usual.

Administrators with the charter school, Francophone Charter School of Oakland, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anyone with information is asked to contact OPD's Felony Assault Unit at (510) 238-3426.
