Northfield boys lacrosse picks up first 2 wins of season

After starting the season with three consecutive defeats, the Northfield High School boys lacrosse team returned home over the past week and charted two consecutive victories with an 8-7 win over Shakopee on Thursday, April 18 and a 13-4 win over Mankato on Monday, April 22.

The wins improved Northfield’s record to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Big 9 Conference play. The Raiders will return to action on Thursday, April 25 with a home match at 7:30 p.m. against Lakeville South before traveling to Owatonna for a 7:30 p.m. game on Monday, April 29.

In the victory over Mankato, Northfield allowed the first goal of the game before it charged back with five unanswered goals to gain a 5-1 first quarter lead. Will Downs scored his first goal of the game at 3:51 to give NHS a 3-1 lead and then ended the first quarter with his second goal of the game at 1:37.

Mankato narrowed the gap to 5-2 early in the second quarter with goal by Colton McGregor before Northfield’s Cam Waters scored at 7:06 to push the lead to 6-2. Mankato replied with a goal by Gage Schmidt at 1:48 to make the halftime score 6-3.

After the intermission, Northfield iced the decision by making another scoring run in the third quarter that started at 11:19 with a goal by Waters. Downs also scored in the quarter along with a goal by George Peterson to take a 9-3 lead.

In the final quarter of the contest, Tristan Westergren scored at 7:28 to make the score 10-3. In the closing minutes of play, Peterson added two more goals and Westegren also scored another goal to cap the night at 13-4.

On the night, Peterson and Downs each had three goals, while Westegren, Waters and Grant Selchow each had two goals to pace the Raiders.

Against Shakopee, Northfield rallied in the fourth quarter to gain a close 8-7 win at Memorial Field on April 18.

Down 6-4 at the start of the final quarter, Northfield scored four consecutive goals to take an 8-6 lead that was capped by Cooper Rand’s game winner with 1:06 left to play.

Shakopee owned a 1-0 lead after the first quarter and went on to build a 5-4 lead at the end of the first half.

In the game, Northfield’s offense was led by Rand and Peterson with two goals apiece while solo goals during the game were added by Bridger Riley, Waters, Selchow and Downs. Of note, Trey Shimota was the goalie of record in both wins for Northfield.
