A teenager was speeding and ran a stop sign before crashing into and killing an elderly man on Jefferson Parkway in Northfield last April, charges say.

Aiden Carl Mandsager, 19, of Dundas, was charged with felony criminal vehicular homicide Monday in Rice County District Court. He also is charged with gross misdemeanor reckless driving.

Mandsager fatally struck Bryce Skar, 85, of Northfield on April 21 at Jefferson Parkway and the Highway 3 service road, according to the charges. Both vehicles rolled and struck the Allina Medical Clinic building.

“Based on witness observations … the defendant operated his Toyota Prius in a grossly negligent manner,” the charging complaint states.

Mandsager had left Northfield High School, stopped at McDonald’s and was speeding down the service road, according to the charges.

Another driver said shortly before the crash Mandsager passed her going 50 to 60 mph on the 30 mph service road and went over the curb onto grass after he passed her.

Two witnesses of the crash said Mandsager was speeding and did not stop at the stop sign. One of the witnesses described Mandsager’s speed as “ungodly fast, like the brakes were out.”

Only on the service road had a stop sign at the T intersection, there was a “stop head” pre-warning sign and “no identifiable obstructions that would prevent a driver from seeing the stop sign aside from a single utility pole,” the court complaint states.

Mandsager was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash; Skar was buckled up.

Both Skar and Mandsager were taken to the Northfield hospital and then transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center with serious injuries. Skar died that afternoon.

Mandsager was issued a summons to make a first court appearance on April 24.
