Northfield High School alumni make their mark in St. Olaf athletics

Northfield High School has made a significant impact on the intercollegiate athletic program at St. Olaf College as several former Raiders are now competing as NCAA Division III student-athletes for their hometown college on the hill.

The following is a rundown of those Northfield athletes at St. Olaf this academic year.

Marcus Hauck and Oscar Hanifl, men’s swim and dive

Northfield High School graduates had a strong presence on the 2023-24 men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at St. Olaf College. On the men’s team, senior Marcus Hauck earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 200 free relay along with gaining Honorable Mention All-MIAC notice in the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke. Senior Oscar Hanifl added All-MIAC honors with a first place finish in the 1M diving and a second place finish in the 3M event. He was also selected as the MIAC Diver of the Year and qualified for this year’s NCAA Division III Region 1 championships.

Tatum Hauck, Paige Steenblock, Ellen Varley and Christina Narveson, women’s swim and dive

Northfield H.S. grads on the women’s team included Tatum Hauck, who gained All-MIAC honors in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle events and Honorable Mention All-MIAC in the 500 freestyle. She also earned Honorable Mention All-MIAC notice with St. Olaf’s 400 free and 800 free relay teams this season.

Sophomore Paige Steenblock, a former Gator/Raider, placed first in the 400 individual medley to gain All-MIAC status this year and earned All-MIAC honors with third place finishes in the 200 butterfly and 200 IM. Ellen Varley, a junior from Northfield, placed fourth to in the 100 butterfly, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay to also received Honorable Mention All-MIAC accolades for the Oles. Northfield’s Chistina Narveson, a senior, was also a member of the women’s swim and dive team roster at St. Olaf in 2023-24.

Joey Glampe, baseball

A grad of Northfield High School, Joey Glampe is in his senior season as an infielder for the St. Olaf College baseball team. The Oles have already started their 2024 season and Glampe already has posted two home runs and nine RBIs in 19 at bats. As a junior, Glampe batted .308 with 33 hits, 18 runs and 24 RBIs to his credit. In his four seasons at St. Olaf, Glimpse owns a .328 batting average with 99 hits and 82 RBIs (thru March 13). He gained Academic All-MIAC honors in 2023 and was also selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.

Ike Vessey, men’s golf

A freshman on the St. Olaf College men’s golf team, Northfield’s Ike Vessey ranked fourth on the team with an average of 77.9 during they 2023 fall season for the Oles. He had a low round of 72 at Minnesota Golf Classic on Sept. 9-10 and also placed 19th at the 2023 MIAC championships at Rush Creek G.C. in Maple Grove with a score of 229 (78-76-75). The Oles will complete their 2023-24 season this spring with matches in LeSueur, Monticello and Northfield.

Anne Fossum, softball

A standout prep athlete at Northfield High School, Anne Fossum is in her senior season as a member of the softball team at St. Olaf College. An All-MIAC selection and National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete in 2022-23, Fossum had 31 hits, 21 runs, 15 RBIs and a .295 batting average during the 2023 season for the Oles. An infield starter, Fossum has already helped lead St. Olaf to a 4-1 record (through March 13) in 2024.

Josh Charlton, men’s track and field

Josh Charlton is in his junior season as a member of the St. Olaf men’s track and field team. At the recent MIAC Indoor Championships, Charlton placed 13th and was eighth in the long jump at the 2023 MIAC Outdoor Championships. He also gained Academic All-MIAC honors during his sophomore season with the Oles.

Emma Johnson, women’s track and field

A member of the women’s track and field team at St. Olaf, Emma Johnson competes in the throws for the Oles. She is a junior and was a two-sport athlete during her prep athletic career at Northfield High School. In 2022-23, Johnson earned Academic All-MIAC honors at St. Olaf.

Nikolas Stoufis, men’s nordic ski

A resident of Faribault and grad of Northfield High School, Nikolas Stoufis recently completed his junior season as a member of the Nordic Ski team at St. Olaf College. A highlight for Stoufis this season was a 17th place finish among MCSA skiers in the 30K skate at the American Birkebeiner with a time of 1:39.24.

Meaghan Stein, women’s alpine ski

A senior on the St. Olaf College Alpine Ski team, Meaghan Stein is a graduate of Northfield High School. She was part of the St. Olaf ski team that placed third at the USCSA national championship on March 9 at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, N.Y. St. Olaf also placed second at the 2024 MCSA Regional Championships.

Simon Dickerson and Luke Stanga, football

A senior on the football team at St. Olaf in 2023, Dickerson had 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a linebacker for the Oles last fall. He played in nine games in 2023 for St. Olaf. He is a graduate of Northfield High School.

A two-time All-MIAC Honorable Mention selection at linebacker, Northfield’s Luke Stanga finished his senior season with the St. Olaf College football team in 2023. Stanga led the Oles with 47 solo tackles and 67 total tackles this fall. He also had seven tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups and four forced fumbles.
