IOWA CITY, Iowa — One of the most iconic artists of his generation was celebrated for his kind deed right here in eastern Iowa. Keith Haring was a pop artist whose advocacy for safe sex and AIDS awareness in the 1980s spread his message all the way to Nickelodeon. Even after his death, the children's network promoted his call for education and ending the stigma that surrounded AIDS. The network famously held town halls with other infected celebrities and even children who contracted HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, from blood transfusions.
