NBC Chicago reported that cicada shells are beginning to be seen in Illinois, and that's the first sign of the insects' arrival. Ecologist Jennifer Rydzewski told the network that "the periodical cicadas will start emerging when the soil temperature eight inches below the ground gets to 64 degrees."

CHICAGO — A Chicago man has been sentenced to probation for crashing into another car and killing a 78-year-old woman as he sped away from a locksmith he did not want to pay. Kurell Purnell, 20, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide with a motor vehicle on Wednesday, according to court records.
