    DC prepares for first Heat Emergency activation of 2024 season

    WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — The District of Columbia’s government is gearing up for its first Heat Emergency activation of the 2024 season.

    With extreme heat forecasted to continue into next week, D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEMA) is taking proactive measures to ensure residents’ safety.

    Acting Director Clint Osborn of HSEMA spoke about the importance of utilizing District resources to cope with the impending heatwave.

    DC Mayor extends the District’s Heat Emergency into next week

    Residents can access information on cooling center locations and transportation services through the District’s website and HSEMA’s social media channels.

    Additionally, Osborn shared general heat safety and preparedness tips, urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members.

    As temperatures rise, the D.C. government said it is dedicated to ensuring that all residents have the necessary resources to beat the heat and stay safe.
