(WKBN) — The leaders of the Republican Parties in Mahoning, Columbiana, and Carroll Counties decided that Al Cutrona will run in November for Mike Rulli’s State Senate seat — and will fill his seat through December.

By a 4-2 vote, Cutrona will be the Republican nominee. Three people interviewed for the position — Cutrona, State Representative Monic Robb Blasdel, and former Representative Tim Ginter.

The Ohio Senate Republican Caucus also decided Cutrona would fill Rulli’s seat from now until Dec. 31, 2024. The remainder of Rulli’s term runs through 2026.

Cutrona currently serves as the Ohio House of Representatives from the 58th district.

After the vote, Cutrona said he was humbled by the support and was excited to start his new role. He’ll go from representing 125,000 people to 375,000 people.

“I think that my background actually fits this district perfectly for both a rural perspective, a city perspective, and obviously from a suburban perspective as well,” he said.

Cutrona has spent four years as a state representative which he says makes him very familiar with the issues facing Ohio.
