(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Free mental health care for first responders is a signature away from reality after passing both the Illinois House and Senate.

The legislation exempts first responders – including police officers, firefighters, EMT’s and 911 telecommunicators – from cost sharing requirements related to mental health care.

Sen. Michael Hastings (D-Frankfort) is the senate sponsor.

“Post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and substance abuse are just a few of the challenges that our first responders grapple with as a result of their line of work. Yet, all too often their struggles are met with stigma and silence, leaving them to suffer in isolation,” Hastings said.

“It's time for us to recognize that mental health is just as crucial as physical health, especially for those who dedicate their lives to protecting ours.”

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart was behind the free mental healthcare for first responders.

He said he was pleased that the General Assembly overwhelmingly approved this legislation.
