As early as their rookie season, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony captivated various demographics with their incredible skills and talents. Famed rapper and music mogul Jay-Z was among those who have followed the pair's journey to the NBA.

In 2003, James was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Anthony was selected by the Denver Nuggets. In the pair's first NBA matchup against each other, Jay-Z was courtside and was asked to pick between the two. Melo's individual game was impressive for Hova, but he could tell Bron was already an all-around player.

"Oh, man, that's a tough one. I think Carmelo plays smooth and under control. But I think LeBron James just got it all, the passing, he just takes it to another level," Jay-Z told ESPN's Stuart Scott .

Melo and LeBron's race for ROTY

Jay-Z was right to say it was tough to pick between Anthony and James. Both youngsters pulled off remarkable rookie seasons. However, only one of them was crowned the NBA's Rookie of the Year, and it was LeBron.

However, some thought Melo was more deserving of the honor, considering he was the most outstanding rookie on paper all season long. Fans also pointed out that Anthony led the Nuggets to the playoffs, something James failed to do with the Cavs.

Jay-Z hails LeBron as the GOAT

As expected, the duo became two of the most dominant players of their era. However, in various interviews and public appearances, Jay-Z has openly expressed his admiration for LeBron's skill set and legacy.

The rap legend often highlights Bron's ability to excel in multiple facets of the game with incredible consistency and The King's longevity. Off the court, he and LeBron have also developed a great friendship. That said, it's no surprise that Jay-Z holds a firm belief that James is the one and only rightful GOAT .

"Being able to perform at a high level for a long period of time, that's excellence," Jay-Z once said of LeBron. "Long after you're gone, people may look at your name and like, 'That's what greatness is.' There's not many you can compare LeBron to. A 19-time All-Star, a remarkable feat. The all-time leading scorer, all-time! I mean, what can you say? He's been through many iterations of the game, and in each era, he's been the best. 'The Chosen One' and that's it."

After 19 years in the league, Anthony called it a career as a 10-time NBA All-Star, six-time All-NBA, and one-time scoring champion. On the other hand, James is still one of the best players in the league and is just coming off the 21st season of his legendary career.
