The chair of the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners is stepping down.

District 3 Commissioner Kathy-Sue Vette has announced her resignation, effective Thursday, May 23. Vette has served on the county board since 2011 and has been the board chair since 2023. She also serves on a number of community boards, including the Summit Pointe Board, Calhoun County Visitors Bureau, Goguac Lake Control Board and the Battle Creek Local Development Finance Authority Board.

The county is now seeking applications to fill the District 3 seat. The person appointed to fill the vacancy will be expected to serve through Dec. 31 of this year.

Those interested can apply online at calhouncountymi.gov/commissionervacancy.

Qualified individuals must reside within District 3 and be a registered voter within that district. District 3 is composed of City of Battle Creek Precincts 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 23. Applicants should also be able to attend Board of Commissioner meetings on the first and third Thursdays of the month through the end of the year.

The county’s corporation counsel and board clerk will review applications and forward eligible applicants to the Board of Commissioners on June 13 for their review. Those individuals will be interviewed by the Board of Commissioners at the regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the county building, 315 W Green St. in Marshall.

Candidates should be prepared to introduce themselves, make statements regarding their desire to fill the vacancy and answer questions asked by the Board of Commissioners.

At the same meeting, Commissioners will be expected to vote on the appointment, and the candidate with the majority vote will be selected to fill the District 3 seat. That person will immediately be sworn into office by the county clerk and commence all responsibilities as the new District 3 commissioner.
