BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) was called to I-94 in Stutsman county twice in quick succession after a pair of accidents — one of which involved the overturning of crash attenuator barrels — took place on the evening of Friday, May 17.

According to the NDHP, at approximately 7:00 p.m., a two-vehicle crash occurred on I-94 near milepost 261, where a Nissan was traveling eastbound in the transition zone to merge onto the eastbound highway when it struck several attenuator barrels and overturned. Debris from the barrel strike then entered the westbound lanes, where a Cadillac vehicle was struck.

The driver of the Cadillac, a 68-year-old woman from McBride, was not injured. The driver of the Nissan (a 21-year-old from West Fargo) was taken to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, where she was cited for reckless driving.

At roughly 7:25 p.m, a second crash occurred when a Jeep Grand Cherokee (driven by a 30-year-old woman from Golden Valley) was traveling eastbound on I-94, and was slowing down for traffic when her vehicle was rear-ended by a Volvo semi truck, eventually coming to rest in the westbound lane facing northwest. The driver of the Volvo (a 79-year old man from Bismarck) then continued eastbound, where he struck a second vehicle (a Chrysler driven by a 48-year-old-woman from Powell, Wyoming) before being disabled in the eastbound lane.

The drivers of the Volvo and Chrysler, as well as the Chrysler’s passengers (an 85-year-old man and 80-year-old woman from Sharon), were not injured in the crash— but the driver of the Jeep was taken to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Traffic on I-94 was shut down for approximately one hour after the crash while first responders worked to remove debris and vehicles from the area. Charges against the Volvo driver are currently pending.
