    EVANSVILLE – It's starting soon.

On May 28, the long-looming overhaul of the Lloyd Expressway will begin on the far western end of the road. According to a Wednesday afternoon news release from the Indiana Department of Transportation, lane closures will kickoff from the Posey County line and stretch to Schutte Road.

The outside lanes will be shut down for shouldering strengthening. The project will eventually move east to Barker Avenue. Work is expected to take about a month, weather permitting.

The schedule seems to be a slight alteration from what Lochmueller Group, the Evansville-based engineering firm behind the more than $100 million Indiana Department of Transportation project, projected in March.

Spokeswoman Nicole Minton said then that work would begin at the Vann Avenue and Stockwell Road intersections around late April or early May, with the West Side construction happening around the same time.

The shoulder work is just the beginning of a revamp that will encompass around 20 intersections and last until at least 2028. Minton said drivers should expect delays and headaches once everything is underway, and be prepared to either avoid the Lloyd altogether or travel at off-peak hours.

"Growing is painful, and this one is going to have some growing pains to get through this," she said in March.
