Five Central Pa counties awarded over $200k for senior community centers

(WTAJ) — Huntingdon, Bedford, Blair, Cambria and Jefferson County are among the 45 senior community centers that will be receiving grants to ensure older adults are supported in familiar, local places with services to stay healthy and connected to their communities.

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging announced on Tuesday, May 14 that 45 Senior Community Centers (SCCs) from 26 counties across the Commonwealth will receive one of the Department’s 2023-24 competitive grants totaling $2 million.

In Central Pennsylvania, the following centers will receive competitive grants:

Bedford County

• The Hyndman Senior Center will receive $31,135 for different programs and services.

Blair County

• The Central Blair Senior Center will receive $58,300 for capital improvements and renovations.

Cambria County

• The Johnstown Senior Center will receive $52,829 for nutrition services.

Huntingdon County

• The Three Springs Senior Center will receive $92,162 foe capital improvements and renovations.

Jefferson County

• The Brockwayville Depot will receive $10,000 for capital improvements and renovations.

The grant funding is appropriated by the General Assembly with proceeds from the Pennsylvania Lottery. You can find a complete list of senior community centers that will be receiving competitive grants here .

Hundreds of other SCCs that didn’t compete for the larger grants will get to divide up an additional $1 million that Governor Josh Shapiro secured in his first budget for SCCs, which serve as social support lifelines in their communities.

Cameron County

• Driftwood Senior Center
• Emporium Senior Center

Centre County

• Centre Hall Center
• Penns Valley Area Center
• Philipsburg NSC
• Snow Shoe NSC
• Centre Region Active Adult Center

Clearfield County

• Houtzdale Family Service Center
• Coalport Center for Active Living
• Kylertown Center for Active Living
• Mahaffey Center for Active Living
