Cambria County vocational tech student wins Hummer

EBENSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — One lucky Admiral Peary Area Vocational Technical student left school with one more vehicle than they had.

That’s right, the school gave away a 2006 Hummer H3! Two students were given a key and the rules were simple, if it starts, you win the vehicle. The two students that earned the most tickets during the school year, were the two given the chance to win the vehicle.

Julie Birchall was the winner of the Hummer and was immediately emotional after the key worked. Birchall said she is not taking the win for granted.

“It doesn’t even feel real, “A lot of shock,” Birchall said. “It makes me feel like everything I did paid off and everything.”

Joe Luther, acting executive director at Admiral Peary, said this opportunity highlights the changing culture that is shining a different light on careers and technical education.

“It just proves to them about changing the culture and looking at career and technical education through a different light. Our programs here on working on this car, it takes about a full year for them to get through the entire process with the car.”

Birchall and her classmate Camryn both earned tickets by getting good grades, having good attendance, or doing other positive deeds while at school. Camryn didn’t leave empty handed though, she received a 50-inch smart TV!
