A Cherokee High School graduating senior has won the annual Maritza Mott Scholarship, the Cherokee County School District announced.

Brenda Hilario earned the $1,000 memorial scholarship, which is open to one graduating senior and awarded based on an application, essay questions and references.

Hilario is the first in her family to attend college. She plans to study entrepreneurship at Kennesaw State University and then open her own business.

An eight-year soccer player and team captain, she is an active volunteer with Interact Club and Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honors Society).

Through her community service, Hilario said she has “gained confidence to talk to and interact with other people.”

“I have also improved in my leadership and have grown to be a better person. By talking and interacting with more people, I will have a positive impact on others,” she said.
