BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The deadline to file your 2023 Louisiana state income tax is this week.

According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, you have until Wednesday, May 15.

There are multiple ways for you to file your state income taxes in Louisiana. You can file them electronically on the LDR website , via tax preparation software and or printed state returns .

If you do not think you will be able to meet this deadline, there is an automatic six-month filing extension available to tax filers in Louisiana. This is because of Act 410 , signed into law in 2022 by former Gov. John Bel Edwards.

LDR said, “Individual taxpayers who cannot file their returns by May 15 do not need to submit a request to obtain the automatic filing extension.”

Deadline to claim $1 billion in tax refunds nears – do you qualify?

Officials said the due date for those who wish to take advantage of the extension is Nov. 15, 2024.

According to LDR, “The automatic extension applies only to the filing of state income tax returns. It does not provide additional time to pay taxes due. Tax payments submitted after the May 15, 2024, deadline are subject to penalties and interest.”
