CCSD to pay $5M to AI company to detect guns on campus

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Clark County School Board is paying an AI company $5 million a year for weapons detection, according to a news release.

Remark Holdings, Inc. issued an email on Tuesday announcing the partnership.

“We are excited to deepen our relationship with the Clark County school system in providing safety solutions to address the proliferation of illegal weapons possession on school properties,” Kai-Shing Tao, the Chief Executive Officer of Remark Holdings, said.

According to the release, the contract also included nine one-year options to extend at $5 million a year.

The Clark County School Board of Trustees approved $5 million for a “weapons detection system” during its April 25 meeting. Approval for the item was done during the trustee’s consent agenda.

As 8 News Now previously reported, former CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara announced in May of 2023 his intention to have metal detectors installed by the start of the current school year in August of 2023 to combat the high number of guns CCSDPD have seized.

However, that did not come to fruition.

According to district data, CCSDPD seized a total of 46 guns from Aug. of 2023 to May of 2024. The guns have been confiscated both on and off campus.

“Given the size of CCSD as the fifth most populous school system in the United States, this win showcases our ability to scale and work closely with the largest school districts of comparable size in providing dependable AI-powered safety solutions,” Tao said.
