SKYLINE, Ala. (WHNT) — An officer was grazed by a bullet and a Skyline man was killed during an officer-involved shooting on Thursday, Jackson County Sheriff Rocky Harnen said.

Officers responded to a domestic call on County Road 143 off Alabama Highway 79 just before 5 p.m. Thursday.

Harnen said when law enforcement arrived, a person at the home began firing a gun in the direction of a Skyline Police officer and grazed him. The sheriff said the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment but had been released as of 9 p.m. Thursday.

The person who fired at the officer, later identified as 44-year-old Charles David Boles of Skyline, was also shot. Harnen confirmed to News 19’s Darryl Burke that Boles died after the incident.

Reflecting on the shooting of four officers in Charlotte, N.C. earlier this week, Harnen said incidents like Thursday’s make officers’ jobs harder.

“Anytime there’s an officer-involved shooting, an officer getting shot in the country, it affects us all. We are a brotherhood, we do the same thing,” the sheriff said. “What people have to remember is we usually don’t put ourselves in the situation, somebody else puts us in the situation to be there. Obviously, it’s an emotional thing. When we found out the officer was ok we calmed down a little bit, but it’s still sad for the family that lost a loved one.”

Harnen added that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to investigate.
