Old York Cellars' new wines to benefit women with Lou Gehrig’s disease

Spring is the time to raise a glass in the rolling hills of Hunterdon County at Old York Cellars in Ringoes.

But with the winery's new partnership with Her ALS Story, you can get more than a buzz from your glass.

About one-third of the proceeds of the new line of wines, including the HeALS Everything Red, How Mom DeALS white and Wine EquALS Happiness Blush, will go to Her ALS Story, which provides a community for women with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ALS is commonly known as a disease that afflicts older men, but Her ALS Story challenges that stereotype with nearly 100 members across the country, many who were diagnosed by age 35.

The wine collection, originally launched in February, has been updated with new labels to celebrate ALS Awareness Month in May.

"The custom design and names of the wines showcase our personality and illustrate that you can find ALS in unexpected places," said Her ALS Story president and founder Leah Stavenhagen, who has ALS. "We hope people will raise a glass as a unique way to celebrate this ALS Awareness Month, and recognize that ALS impacts people of all ages and genders.”

Her ALS Story launched in 2021. Membership is free and comes with access to its community through bi-weekly video meetings, ongoing interaction with members through WhatsApp chats, and a variety of virtual and in-person events.

Many Her ALS Story members are active ALS advocates participating in conferences, raising funds for research, and appearing on local and national news outlets. Some have published memoirs, and have produced or participated in documentaries about ALS.
