CLINTON — The SCS Board of Education has approved the recommendation from SCS Superintendent Dr. Jamie King to appoint Nicole Peterson as the principal of Midway Middle School.

The appointment was made at the board’s April 22 meeting.

Peterson moves into her new role with over 18 years of experience in education, all with Sampson County Schools. Prior to serving as the SCS PK-8 director since 2019, Peterson has been a classroom teacher at Union High School, assistant principal at Union Elementary and principal at Plain View Elementary.

“While the director position offered unique challenges and opportunities, my heart remains deeply committed to the day-to-day interactions with students, teachers, and parents that define the role of a principal,” Peterson stated in an email. “Returning to a principal position allows me to re-engage with the core aspects of education that inspire me the most. It provides me with the opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact within the school community, fostering an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

“I want to assure everyone involved, including students, parents, staff, and community partners, that this decision was not taken lightly,” Peterson continued. “I am fully committed to ensuring a smooth transition and continuing to uphold the high standards of excellence that our school community is known for. I am excited to be back in the school and classrooms and am eager to support a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.”

She is a product of Sampson County Schools, attending in the Union district and graduating from Union High School.

Peterson holds a Master of School Administration, add-on license, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“We are excited for this new journey for Mrs. Peterson and know that her vast experience in Sampson County Schools will serve Midway Middle School well,” said SCS Superintendent Dr. Jamie King.

Peterson will remain the PK-8 director through June 30, 2024 and will transition on July 1, 2024 as principal of Midway Middle School.
