    Sussex County Voters Guide to the 2024 Primaries

    SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – Mail-in ballots began reaching county voters for the June 4, 2024 primary.  Voters must indicate their party as part of the primary voting process. Voters who have requested mail-in ballots are not eligible to vote in-person on a voting machine according to Sussex County Board of Election information.

    The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is 3 p.m. on June 3 in the Sussex County Clerk’s Office.

    Voters using the mail-in ballot must follow all directions carefully which are included in the envelope with the ballot.  The mail-in ballot includes a yellow certificate of mail-in voter envelope, ballot and blue return envelope. The mail-in ballot does not require a postage stamp.

    Once completed, the ballot is placed in the yellow envelope. The yellow envelope is signed and must be sealed by removing the plastic strip to close.  The flap must remain attached. The yellow envelope is placed inside the blue envelope and must sealed in the same way.

    According to the Sussex County Clerk’s Office there are three ways to submit mail-in ballot s.

    Mail-in ballots can be hand-delivered to the Sussex County Board of Elections in Newton.

    Mail-in ballots that are mailed must be post-marked no later than six days after the June 4 primary.

    Mail-in ballots can be put in one of 14 secure drop boxes that are to be monitored by security cameras and will be picked up daily by the County Board of Elections:

    1. Sussex County Clerk’s Office, Newton
    2. Andover Township Municipal Building
    3. Byram Township Municipal Building
    4. Frankford Township Municipal Building
    5. Franklin Borough Municipal Building
    6. Fredon Township Civic Center
    7. Hampton Township Municipal Building
    8. Hardyston Township Municipal Building
    9. Hopatcong Borough Municipal Building
    10. Montague Township Municipal Building
    11. Sandyston Township Municipal Building
    12. Sparta Township Municipal Building
    13. Vernon Township Municipal Building
    14. Wantage Township Municipal Building

    To change from a mail-in ballot recipient, the voter must request to be removed from the list using an Opt-Off Form.

    In addition to mail-in ballots, there are five in-person early voting days for the primary running from May 29 to June 2.

    In-person early voting locations are:

    • Cochran House Professional Building, Newton with parking on Trinity Street
    • Sussex-Wantage Branch Library, Wantage
    • Louise Childs Branch Library, Stanhope

    The 2024 New Jersey Primary ballot :

    • President
    • 13th District United States Senator
    • District 5 or District 7 U.S. Congress
    • Two Sussex County Commissioner positions

    Municipalities with committee and council races:

    • Andover Borough – two positions
    • Andover Township – two positions
    • Branchville Borough – two positions
    • Frankford Township – one position
    • Franklin Borough – two positions
    • Fredon Township – two positions
    • Green Township – one position
    • Hamburg Borough – two positions
    • Hampton – two positions
    • Hardyston Township – one position
    • Hopatcong Borough – two positions
    • Lafayette Township – one position
    • Montague Township – two positions
    • Ogdensburg Borough – two positions
    • Sandyston Township – one position
    • Stanhope Borough – two positions
    • Stillwater Township – two positions
    • Sussex Borough – two positions
    • Walpack Township – one position
    • Wantage Township – one position

    Non-partisan Faulkner towns do not have primary races. These include Byram, Newton, Sparta and Vernon.  They may have contested races in November.
