PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — State lawmakers are considering legislation that could lead to more spaces for people to live in Rhode Island.

The R.I. House Municipal Government and Housing Committee met at the State House Tuesday to discuss several housing-related bills.

Two are from House Speaker Joe Shekarchi’s package of bills he announced back in March.

The first bill is focused on building permits for applications and submissions for planning and zoning. If passed, this would provide more transparency, streamline processes, and make timeline requirements clearer.

The second bill would allow residential uses in commercial zones. The current law allows households in all zoning districts, but residential use is prohibited by some cities and towns.

Shekarchi spoke Monday about how he and other lawmakers are dedicated to addressing the housing crisis in the Ocean State.
