    Maxed out, Cape May Airport's Tech Village starts Phase 2

    Officials gathered last week for the groundbreaking of the second phase of the Tech Village initiative at the Cape May Airport.

    The estimated $6.45 million project aims to build on the initial Phase 1 tech facility , which has quickly reached full occupancy.Phase 2 will house multiple tenants. The space will provide a dynamic and supportive environment for budding industries to thrive in the region. Meanwhile, it will also catalyze economic growth and create jobs.

    Some features of the new project include:




    • Construction of a 16,434-square-foot facility supporting the expansion of the aviation technology sector in Cape May County


    • A nearly $3 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and matching local funds to support costs




     


    “The Economic Development Administration is pleased to support the County of Cape May, New Jersey, as they seek to diversify the region’s economy,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Castillo. “The new facility will provide the space needed to grow Cape May County’s aviation technology cluster building a more resilient economy.”

    Linda Cruz-Carnall, regional director of EDA’s Philadelphia Regional Office, spoke at the event. A slew of local, county and state officials as well as other project stakeholders joined her. Cruz-Carnall touted the EDA’s investment in the county and the local projected economic impact from the project.

    The EDA announced the grant funding in December 2021. So the groundbreaking marks a major next step forward for the project.

    “This is a pivotal moment for Cape May County as we look forward to offering our community additional, well-paying, and stable employment opportunities,” said Cape May County Commissioner Director Leonard Desiderio.

    Commissioner Bobby Barr noted the efforts of the EDA as well as U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd District, and the Atlantic County Improvement Authority for their instrumental support in progressing the project.


    “Their recognition of the burgeoning tech sector’s impact on our county and the valuable jobs it will bring is greatly appreciated,” said Barr.
