Police continue investigating alleged assault at Chesterfield Park

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Chesterfield County Police Department continues to search for a man who they say assaulted a woman while she was walking her dogs on Sunday morning.

Authorities told 8News it happened on Sunday, April 28 at 9:30 a.m. at Richmond National Battlefield Park, specifically on the Fort Darling Trail. Officials say a woman was walking her dogs when a man approached her to talk.

Police said she didn’t respond because she had headphones on. That’s when the man got angry and attacked her. Sgt. Winfred Lewis of Chesterfield Police said the incident is not something the department is used to.

“I’ve lived in this community in Chesterfield for quite some time, and I’ve never even been there,” Lewis said. “We don’t have any other instances there, nothing of this nature.”

Chesterfield authorities provided a description for the suspect — a Black male, 6-feet-2-inches in height who was wearing a white t-shirt with either black or gray jeans and was last seen going into a white sedan.

While police continue their search, Lewis said the incident could serve as lesson in being aware.

“The course of some years doing the [law enforcement] job, you develop this hypervigilance to everywhere that you go, you kind of take note of who’s around you,” Lewis said. “I would encourage everyone to adopt some semblance of that, to where if you’re going to be somewhere and there’s no one else around, just take note.”
