Grant County woman charged with burning building on her own property

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- A woman is facing charges after Grant County Sheriff's officials said she tried to burn down a building on her own property.

Crews were called to the 2400 block of Highway 81 in the Town of Lima at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a structure fire. According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, initial reports alleged that 51-year-old Jayne McPhail, who lives at the address, set the fire herself.

Officials did not specify if the building that was set on fire was McPhail's home or another building on the property. After an investigation, Grant County Sheriff's deputies arrested McPhail on tentative charges of arson. The incident remains under investigation.

Online court records show McPhail was charged Monday with unsafe burning of one's own building. During an initial appearance, her cash bond was set at $2500.

A status conference in the case is set for May 9.
