Pennsylvania school bus driver wins $1M from Mega Millions on her birthday

JONESTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — It was a happy birthday for a Pennsylvania school bus driver who won $1 million on a Mega Millions ticket her husband bought her.

The lucky winner, April Zipp, of Lebanon County, told lottery officials she got the ticket as a birthday gift from her husband. When she woke up on her birthday, she scanned the ticket to find a claim form was needed — which confused her at first.

“My husband stopped at BG’s the day before for ice cream and purchased $20 in tickets,” Zipp told lottery officials. “I got up the next day on my birthday and checked the tickets with the Lottery’s app and it told me a claim form was needed. I didn’t understand it at first.”

Her husband went back to BG’s Value Market on Old Route 22 in Jonestown to verify the ticket.

“The clerk scanned the ticket and told me it was a big winner and to sign the back,” said Zipp. “I went outside and cried.”

Zipp told officials that she plans to continue working as a school bus driver for now, a job she’s had for 40 years.

“[My children] couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I plan to continue working for now, but my husband and I would like to buy an RV and travel and finally live life.”

BG’s Value Market will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
