EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island radio icon Giovanni has signed off for the last time at 92 PRO-FM on Monday after 50 years.

Daniel “Giovanni” Centofanti announced his retirement on air earlier this year.

Our cameras were there on his last day during 12 News This Morning and The Rhode Show. His former co-hosts Will Gibert and Kim Zandy were among those in the studio wishing him well.

His retirement coincides with the radio station’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Giovanni told Will he never thought stepping away from the show would be as big as it was.

“I was wrong!” he said. “I was wrong, it’s emotional, it’s mind-boggling, and it’s a lot to take in. It’s going to take me a while to process it all.”

At the end of the morning, a new sign was unveiled inside the studio called “The Giovanni Studio.”

The last song he played was “Thank you for being a friend.”
