After a Monday of changeable sky conditions and warmer temperatures we have a Tuesday that probably goes down as the best weather day of the week so take advantage of that. We are far enough away from both last night's weather system that brought showers and thunderstorms to the Mid Atlantic. That has now weakened and passed to the east. The next weather system and cold front will be impacting the Ohio Valley today so we should be in a good spot. We expect no worse than partly sunny skies today. High temperatures will reach the mid 70s to some lower 80s. Of course look for cooler conditions along south and east facing shorelines.

Denver continues to invest in millions in rental and mortgage assistance programs and other ways to prevent people from losing their homes. The Safety, Housing, Education and Homelessness Committee of the City Council approved Wednesday almost $12 million in new spending for rental assistance programs. Receiving contracts were Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. for $4.4 million and The Community Firm, doing business as Community Economic Defense Project, for $6.6 million to be used for rental assistance. The money comes from the Temporary Rental Assistance and Utility program, or TRUA, according to city staff. The Community Firm also received a $758,000 contract to operate a hotline that will handle as many as 36,000 calls per year to connect residents to rental and utility assistance.

A contract with Colorado Safe Parking Initiative will become final at Tuesday’s Mayor-City Council meeting. The new contract removes the requirement for the initiative to add two more lots serving a total of 16 vehicles. That leaves just two lots that the initiative already operates. The city will pay $350,000 for the initiative to operate the lots.

The Denver City Council learned more Wednesday about the workforce development component of the Denver Asylum Seekers Program. The city has transitioned the way it helps migrants, closing shelters and instead placing 800 people in the asylum program. That includes people who had been staying in non-congregate hotel shelters, all but one of which have closed. New migrant arrivals will not be eligible for the six-month work program until some graduate, according to a presentation by city staff. The city intends to keep 500 people in the work program at a time, according to Tony Anderson, workforce development manager for the city.

Kay Moshier McDivitt of the Alliance referred to targeted prevention as turning off the faucet of people experiencing homelessness. The problem, she said, is that no matter how fast homeless services agencies house someone, new homeless people keep pouring from the faucet. If you envision the faucet filling a bathtub, soon the tub overflows, leaving many people experiencing homelessness unhoused.
