BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)–Students from over 20 schools across Berkeley County came to Stratford High School to participate in the One Berkeley United Games.

In 2021, Berkeley County School District (BCSD) worked to create a stronger sense of community by bringing together students of different abilities for a day full of outside fun.

“Today is an exciting day. This event is the elementary United games, an opportunity for all our children with special needs to come and bring buddies. We have high school students here, and they all come together and make it a very engaging day,” said Natalie Lockliear, The director of Recruit and Retention for BCSD.

The students participated in activities like obstacle courses, ball tosses, bowling, and more. The activities emphasize teamwork between special needs students and their buddies.

“I’m feeling good because I just love having this opportunity to play with people who need help. It’s just going to be super fun today. I’m sorry about helping out my buddy Chenzo to have fun,” said Colten Taylor, a Buddy Partner with BCSD.

Officials told News 2 that the event was about ensuring every student felt essential and involved.

“We are very intentional about including and making sure everyone feels that they’re seen and heard throughout our district, and today is just that opportunity that we have to unite everyone,” said Anthony Dixon, the superintendent for BCSD.
