The Jets will likely use their top-10 pick to get another weapon for Aaron Rodgers at Thursday’s NFL Draft, but Sal says, if the situation presented itself, the best course of action would to be to take Rodgers’ eventual replacement.

If a quarterback like Michael Penix Jr. falls to 10 th , Sal would like to see Gang Green take him to play under Rodgers until the future Hall of Famer retires, but doesn’t see Joe Douglas and company being that forward thinking on Thursday.

“You’re picking this high, you’d hope to never pick that high again,” Sal said. “They’re looking at it the wrong way, to the point where we’re not even discussing it, because it’s not gonna happen.

“Get the quarterback and transition nicely. Have him learn under Rodgers for a year or two, and then that’s it. That’s the ideal situation. They’re not gonna do it, even if he falls to them, because Rodgers would throw a hissy fit. I’d be making the pick for not now - you should never make a draft pick based on now, the short term.”

Sal says Brock Bowers has “bust” written all over him, and doesn’t trust the Jets to make the forward-thinking move if a potential quarterback of the future is on the board at No. 10, because they are too focused on Rodgers and the here and now.

“I’d rather trade down, take a quarterback if he’s there, take a wide receiver later in this deep wide receiver draft,” Sal said. “Not ‘Let’s get the tight end to help Rodgers now in the short term.’

“You wouldn’t think Penix is more of an asset moving forward for your team than a tight end?”
