Eight days after the March 7 remarks, Johnson (R-La.) caught up with Biden at the US Capitol’s Friends of Ireland luncheon and said he was sorry “for the eye-roll memes that went around the world,” RealClearPolitics reported over the weekend.
His words went unheeded by several members who heckled the president, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who also broke House rules and wore a “MAGA” hat during the address.
Johnson explained to RCP that he wants to be able to “look my kids in the eye and tell them that Daddy acted like a gentleman.”
Johnson was thrust into the speakership last October following a mutiny that ousted former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
Now both men have been forced to navigate multiple legislative snarls.
Since March, Johnson managed to pass legislation funding the government through Sept. 30, reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and push through a suite of foreign aid bills.
All of those actions have roiled the Republican conference and sparked fears of another GOP revolt like the one that sidelined McCarthy.
