CEDAR HILL, Mo. – A pedestrian was struck and killed Monday morning on westbound Missouri 30 at Gravois Road, causing a major traffic jam. The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells FOX 2 that the person was standing in the road before being hit by a vehicle.

“The pedestrian evidently was standing in the traffic lane at the time for reasons we don’t know,” Cpl. Dallas Thompson with MSHP said.

According to the crash report, a pickup truck hit a man standing in the highway. Troopers identified the pedestrian as 59-year-old Norman McArthur.

“The vehicle that was in front of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian swerved to avoid the pedestrian and the second driver, not knowing the pedestrian was there, was unable to swerve and avoid the pedestrian, striking him,” Cpl. Thompson said.

That same stretch of Highway 30 is a common area involving crashes, according to Cpl. Thompson.

“There’s a lot of intersections all the way up from Gravois Bluffs all the way out towards Burns Mill. Several big major intersections with stop lights and people are just inattentive to the roadways a lot of times or people just driving too fast and cause all these crashes to occur,” he said.

MSHP sees people in the roadways at all hours of the day. If you see someone in the road, the best thing to do is to call law enforcement.

“Never be afraid to call and report a pedestrian that was walking or acting odd (or) strange, like they’re trying to cross the roadway in a very safe area,” Cpl. Thompson said. “Maybe we can get out there and help them get across the roadway before they get struck.”
