As firefighters arrived on the scene, the Schuylkill County Communications Center said crews called for additional manpower.

According to officials, about a dozen teams of first responders from Northumberland and Schuylkill counties were called to the apartment fire.

Chief Philip Groody with the Ashland Fire Department said it took firefighters about an hour to get the flames under control and they left the scene about four hours later.

The Red Cross was called to assist five people who were living in the apartments.

State police are looking into the cause of the fire at this time.
