One person was killed, and two more, including a child, were left with severe to critical injuries in a rollover wreck on a Mississippi highway Saturday afternoon.
Officials with the Jones County Fire Council confirmed that the incident occurred around 1:22 p.m. at the Masonite Lake Road exit on U.S. 84 east in Jones County.
Upon receiving the accident call, emergency responders from the M&M, Powers, Glade, and Rustin volunteer fire departments rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a pickup truck and Chevrolet Tahoe involved in the collision, each carrying three passengers.
The Tahoe had overturned and landed on its roof in the middle of U.S. 84′s eastbound lanes, while the pickup truck was disabled in the eastbound lanes at the intersection.
Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Baumgardner. The identity of the deceased individual was withheld pending notification of their next of kin, according to Jones County Coroner Burl Hall.
Meanwhile, the two critically injured individuals, one with apparent critical injuries and the other with serious injuries, were swiftly transported by EMServ Ambulance to a nearby hospital emergency department.
Firefighters immediately sprang into action, providing aid to the injured and implementing traffic control measures to ensure the safety of both patients and responders. Among the six individuals involved, three sustained minor injuries but declined hospitalization.
The severity of the incident prompted authorities to close down U.S. 84 entirely at the intersection for nearly two hours, with the scene not fully cleared until 4:20 p.m. Assistance from Jones County Sheriff Department deputies and Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers was also enlisted to manage the situation.
As investigations into the crash continue, details surrounding the circumstances leading to the fatal collision remain under scrutiny by law enforcement officials.
