Florida Democrats target Taylor Swift fans with ‘Florida Dems!!!’ text

The Florida Democratic Party has entered its Taylor Swift era.

Following the release of the superstar singer’s new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” on Friday, the party is mobilizing her fans to “Tay-ke back Florida” through a voter registration push targeting women ages 18 to 30.

The campaign, “Florida Dems!!!”, was inspired by Swift’s new song “Florida!!!”

In a text being sent out to registered Democrats in that demographic Friday afternoon, the organization said it was calling on Swifties “haunted by cheating Republicans and tortured by the prospect of another cruel summer in Florida” to join an organizing call with Florida Democratic Party chairperson Nikki Fried at 6 p.m. April 25.

“Fighting for Florida can feel like one hell of a drug!!!” the text read, urging voters to support Amendment 3 legalizing recreational marijuana and Amendment 4 protecting abortion access in the state’s Constitution. “In 2024, we can fix Florida. No, really, we can.”

A party spokesperson said the campaign has been in the works since Swift released her “Tortured Poets Department” track listing in February, but that the party has not been in touch with Team Taylor. Politico previously reported on the planned campaign.

The initiative aims to recruit young volunteers and provide training to register voters and reenroll inactive Democrats in advance of November’s election. Democrats have fallen behind Republicans in voter registration as the state has drifted to the right in recent elections.

Swift has historically picked her spots when it comes to political activism and involvement, at times to the consternation of some listeners. But she rebuked then-President Donald Trump in 2020, and her ascent to unprecedented levels of success and celebrity with last year’s Eras Tour has prompted speculation that an endorsement of President Joe Biden could swing this year’s presidential race.

While Swift probably isn’t a secret White House agent, as some conservative conspiracists have theorized, she will have a prime opportunity to swing thousands of votes in Florida when she performs three shows at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Oct. 18-20.
